After discovering that his own daughter was pregnant, the tribal leader was saddened that this declaration would affected his own family. He then forced his daughter to sacrifice her new born.

The daughter became so depressed that she refused any food or drink and locked herself in the room. After several days and nights of no food, the daughter became delusional and began to hear her baby’s cry. She ran out of the room and began to make her way to a palm tree where she thought she saw her child

The following morning the tribe was saddened to discover the lifeless body of the tribal leaders daughter under the palm. When the father looked to the heavens, he noticed that the palm tree contained a plentiful source of berries which they latter called acai fruit

This single berry not only saved the tribe from hunger, but was instrumental in this tribe’s economic growth. The people of Belem — the state in Brazil where the Acai fruit is harvested — are said to be the descendants of this same tribe.

To this day the acai fruit has proven mighty as it is the export that has kept this tiny tribe afloat since its discovery

Preventing Obesity Starts With The Food We Eat

Natural Purple Pigments In Fruits, Vegetables And Berries, like the acai berry, could assist in preventing obesity as scientists in Arkansas are reporting new evidence that natural pigments responsible for the beautiful blue,purple, and reddish color qualities of certain fruits and vegetables may help in preventing obesity.

The scientist concluded through animal studies that the extract of the fruit is more effective than actually eating the fruit when it comes to weight loss.

Dr. Prior who is part of this research team stated that a compound found in these purple fruits known as anthocyanins, prevented obesity when tests were conducted on mice fed a diet high in fat.

The mice also were reported to show other healthy benefits from the fruit.  Anthocyanins are found in acai berries blackberries, purple corn, and many other purple based foods.

The mice were fed for two months a high calorie diet on top of drinking water and extracted anthocyanins from acai berry gained less weight and had a lower body fat level than the other mice.

Anthocyanins fed as the whole blueberry did not prevent and could have possibly increased obesity, the study found. However, feeding purified anthocyanins from blueberries or strawberries reduced obesity.

Foods That Help Fight Cancer

In a first to investigate the acai berry, the University of Florida found in a recent study that the fruit contained enough antioxidants to destroy human cancer cells.

The results showed that the acai berry destroyed leukemia cells 86 percent of the time where it triggered a self-destruct response according to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry where the information was initially published.

There is a rich source of antioxidants found in the acai berry and antioxidants are important in fight off harmful toxins that lead to cancer. The research showed that having some sort of acai berry extract added to the daily diet can do wonders for the human body.

The study also noted that it is not intended to show that leukemic can be cured in humans with the the acai berry elements.

This study was never intended to raise any false hopes that the acai berry is a cure for leukemia. The results are still very positive however. The human body has shown promising results with compounds that have been tested under the cell-culture model.

Other fruits have proven similar results in killing cancer cells like mangoes, grapes and guavas. Scientist are still unsure what role antioxidants play in fighting cancer cells as there are other factors that come into play as well.

Study Shows Supplements Lack Proper Antioxidants


A recent article fro the Mayo clinic health letter states that study conclude that there is minimal benefits when trying to obtain antioxidants from dietary supplements. The report goes on to say that the optimal way in receiving a healthy dose of antioxidants is to eat foods that are rich with in it. Some of these foods include:

vitamins E and C

carotene

lycopene

lutein

Many other other factors could possibly aid in preventing diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and macular degeneration. Antioxidants are thought to help because they can neutralize free radicals, which are toxic byproducts of natural cell metabolism.The process of the body producing antioxidants is not very efficient and usually declines with the onset of age.

Tests reveal that those who eat antioxidant rich foods get many health benefits. Foods, rather than supplements, may boost antioxidant levels because foods contain an unmatchable array of antioxidant substances.

Dietary supplements are limited in offering the maximum benefits of antioxidants because they only come maybe one or two out of the multitude of antioxidants known. This can be troubling because science has not determined which ones are responsible for the health benefits. Some of the known healthy antioxidants are:

Taking too many antioxidants through supplements such as vitamin c can cause more damage than good according to a recent study.

This is not true in many of the foods that have higher antioxidants and offer many other health benefits such as high fiber, protein and saturated fats.

Currently, the government give no guidelines on which antioxidants to consume as well as how many to take as part of their daily diet.

It is encouraged for the time being to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables that have a high concentration of amino acids like acai berry.

Thanks to updated technology, this study done by the USDA is the most comprehensive and accurate ever done concerning antioxidants research. They analyzed over 100 foods like the acai berry, fruits, vegetables, spices, and nuts.

All foods were measured based off of antioxidant concentration and antioxidant capacity per serving. Russet potatoes,artichokes and beans were the best source of antioxidants in the vegetable category. Acai berries, cranberries, and blueberries were tops for antioxidants in the fruit category–while pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts were your best source of antioxidants in the nut family.

Spices are normally consumed in tiny increments, yet many are high in antioxidants. In terms of antioxidant concentration, ground cloves, ground cinnamon and oregano were the highest among the spices studied.

The data should prove useful for those seeking to add more antioxidants in their diet. You must still use caution as the total antioxidant capacity of the foods does not necessarily reflect their potential health benefit, which depends on how they are absorbed and utilized in the body.

At the moment, there are no government guidelines for people to know many antioxidants to take and what kinds of antioxidants to consume in their daily meals–this is also the case with vitamins and minerals. A major barrier to such guidelines is a lack of consensus among nutrition researchers on uniform antioxidant measurements.
